Squirrel Dog Pricing Guide

Pricing for buying a squirrel dog is not an exact science. However I have made some observations in my experience.

Below are some examples of different types of dogs and levels of experience. Along with what you may expect to pay for each.

Unregistered Puppy pricing - $100 or less. Sometimes people will give these away. It’s hard to get much for a dog that is basically a mutt that happens to have parents who are squirrel dogs.

Well bred Registered puppy pricing- $250-$350. You get what you pay for and if you go to one of the more reputable breeders you will certainly be happy with your expense. When I say registered I’m specifically referring to OMCBA registered or equivalent.

Unregistered “Started dog” pricing - Depending on how “started” of course but assuming he can tree his own squirrel he’s worth about $500. In this regard buying squirrel dogs is like buying used cars. If it will start, run, and drive it’s worth a few hundred bucks no matter how it looks or what kind it is. Same with dogs. If he can go out and tree his own squirrel I’ll give you $500 for him. Make the seller take you out and show you the dog tree his own squirrel though. Never take anyone’s word for it. I don’t care if he has a bible on his dash and quotes scripture the whole time.

Well Bred Registered “Started Dog” pricing - Assuming we’re talking about a dog with a good pedigree with treeing and squirrel hunting in mind you’re going to pay $1000 or more for one that is well started and treeing his own game. I’ve even seen good solid started dogs with good breeding go for $2500, $3500, etc. There really is no limit, it’s just what the buyer is willing to pay. If you’re looking to get a head start in the squirrel dog business invest a couple of thousand and get yourself a nice young dog like this from a reputable dog man.

Unregistered “Finished Dog” pricing - Once again it’s hard to charge a premium for a dog with no pedigree. Unless this dog is truly an exception and has proven it on the field trial circuit it’s hard to get more than $1000-$2500 for one of these type dogs.

Well Bred Registered ”Finished Dog” pricing - This is where the prices can get ridiculous. Expect to pay $3500-$5000 for a truly finished dog, and the prices only go up from there. Dogs have sold in this business for $15,000.

Once again never taken anyone’s word for it on a dog. Not even someone you think is a friend. I’m serious on this. Make him show you that dog will hunt and tree the way you like it.
